We’ve moved to Milford Connecticut!
Not actually, but it really does feel like Liam and I live here now.
Over a month ago, Liam’s consulting job at North Sails required him to be in Milford, CT for some hands-on engineering. When asked if I would tag along, I jumped on the opportunity to explore a new city with a free hotel room. Of course, I was under the assumption we’d only be here for 10 days… five weeks later, we’ve made ourselves quite comfortable at the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Stratford, I’m even considering adopting a succulent for my desk area!
Though Milford is a quiet town, the coastal city offers a variety of activities that I’ve busied myself with while Liam spends the day at work. Once I’ve finished my own online work, I venture around the area exploring all the activities that Milford has to offer.
Fun Fact: Milford is the headquarters of Subway! I, personally, do not enjoy sandwiches – but the franchise is as present as Dunkin Donuts in Boston.
Milford has the longest coastline of any city in Connecticut, meaning you can see the ocean from anywhere in town. There’s a dog-friendly boardwalk at Silver Sands State Park that Ellie and I frequently stroll. During the summer months the beaches do not allow pets, but areas will allow for kayaking and paddle boarding. Liam and I have opted for sunset picnics with Thai food and wine while Ellie illicitly frolics in the ocean. The salt-water definitely confuses her!
Another record Milford holds is the longest “green” in New England. This beautifully landscaped walkway is peppered with monuments and local sculptures, all surrounded by rows and rows of flowerbeds. The green isn’t too far from Eisenhower Park, where Ellie and I hike different riverside trails every day. Only getting lost once, we wander through the woods until either Ellie is tired or I am covered in mosquito bites; whichever comes first.
There’s a family owned restaurant called Kimberly’s half a mile from Liam’s work, where Ellie and I have become locals. It’s the dog they love, not me, but I embrace the huge smiles and greetings we get from the waitresses. I’ve spent hours working and sipping wine on their outside patio. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to stop in and say hi to the incredible staff.
Our favorite places to eat have been Stonebridge Restaurant and Dockside Brewery. We had date night at Stonebridge, a seafood fine dining restaurant surrounded by a reservoir and water fountains. We weren’t overly impressed with the food, but what the food lacked in quality the atmosphere made up for in elegance. At Dockside Brewery, Liam enjoyed Connecticut craft beers while I opted for ciders. We snacked on appetizers and watched the sunset sink into the Pacific Ocean.
I’ve become so familiar with Milford that I no longer need GPS to get around. The quirky small town has started to grow on me, and I could get used to living on the ocean. I do miss my apartment, but I don’t mind hotel housekeeping services cleaning up our bedroom and kitchen every day!
Altogether, we’ve had a great time living in Connecticut these past few weeks, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to explore a new town while working. I’m hoping we’ll eventually make it back to Boston, but all bets are currently off. In the mean time, you can find me at Kimberly’s slowly making my way through every Pino Grigio bottle in stock.
